From Herts to Hollywood: Nick Rundlett’s Journey in Sound Engineering

Meet Nick Rundlett, a University of Hertfordshire alumnus who has turned his passion for music into a thriving international career. Graduating in 2021 with a BSc (Hons) in Audio Recording and Production, Nick now works as a Sound Assistant and Trainee Sound Supervisor for Tall Audio, contributing to high-profile projects for Netflix, BBC, and ITV.

Nick’s decision to study at Herts was straightforward. “I attended an open day, met some of my future lecturers, and learned about the course. I knew then that Herts was the perfect place to pursue my passion for music,” he recalls. Drawn by the university’s modern campus, advanced facilities, and experienced creative arts faculty, Nick chose Herts over other universities.

During his time at Herts, Nick gained practical experience as a Sound and Lighting Engineer at The Forum, the hub of the Hertfordshire Students’ Union. He also served as a Senior Student Engineer at the on-campus music studios, providing technical support and conducting tours of the university’s facilities. “I made many friends and connections at Herts, some of whom I am still in contact with,” Nick says.

Now working for Tall Audio, Nick has had the opportunity to contribute to major projects for TNT Sport, Eurosport, Netflix, BBC, ITV, and ITV Sport. His work has taken him around the world, including to the Superbowl, on Netflix’s Tour de France documentary, and to over 60 MotoGP events. “The course and extra-curricular work I did at Herts have been invaluable. I studied for a non-broadcasting degree, but I’ve been able to apply many of those skills across different audio disciplines. I can’t thank Herts and the lecturers enough,” he explains.

Looking ahead, Nick aims to advance his career as a Sound Supervisor and eventually transition to self-employment as a freelancer. He encourages prospective students to consider Herts’ audio recording and production courses, saying, “Herts has had a massive impact on my life. It’s a fabulous place to learn, grow, and make friends. To current Herts students, your hard work and dedication will pay off. Graduation feels so much sweeter when you’ve given everything for that final grade.”
